Who is responsible? The old man, the car driver or the rest of us.

Fuel prices are increasing like cryptocurrency's prices, instead, the roads are becoming busier than the passing day. This is a true incident that happened a few days ago and never left my thoughts then after. My village is located on the side of the national highway(NH-28) in East Champaran, Bihar. Transportation is so much easier because of the highway, but something that is unwanted that came with it is the risk of accident (danger to life).

On a regular evening, I was playing cricket on a government school's ground when I heard some unusual sound. Everyone present ran towards and we saw that an old man was unconsciously lying on the divider of lanes and his bike was thrown away on the other side of the road. We called for an ambulance from NHAI. It took near about half an hour and it was sent by the private authority which owns the nearest toll tax station. By god's grace, his life was saved.

During the panicking situation, I observed a lot of things and some of them started knocking on my mind repeatedly. Starting from the delay in the arrival of the ambulance, because half an hour is pretty enough time in those kinds of situations where everything relies on the heartbeat of the victim/patient. Anyhow there was no interference from the local police instead they were informed immediately after the accident. Except that two patrolling police vans passed during that time but none of them stopped there to know anything about the crowd. They must be thinking that it was not a matter of their involvement.

Again starting from the reason, the vehicle that hit the old man. I think the person in the driving seat of that vehicle has not kept his feet on the brakes after the accident. It would have been very kind of him if he would have just stopped and maybe helped the victim. I am not going to blame him for the accident because he was driving on a national highway and a speed of 90-100 kmph is obvious for a four-wheeler. He was only responsible because of his inhuman nature( decided not to stop by). Maybe he was thinking that what locals are gonna do to him or due to fear.

Accidents on Indian roads are very common because of congested roads. National highways and state highways themselves have a share of 30% and 25% of accidents respectively. Hence, road safety has turned into a factor of utmost importance for the country's citizens. However, statistics say that lockdown saved many lives that would have been in danger due to road accidents. Already our lives are shortened what if it gets wasted due to road accidents. Therefore everyone should think about it and work together to reduce it.

On the other part government should do whatever they can do to increase road safety. Direct entries and exits to the highway create more risks to accidents. There should be a solution to address this problem because there is/are someone waiting for you at home. And always help others in those cases because each passing second means a lot to him/her. Just ask yourself, " Who is responsible?"
