Supermarket: The Paradox of Choice
Do you ever wonder that when you step out of a supermarket, the purchased item is the same as the list you thought before stepping in? "Two-third of what we buy in the supermarket we had no intention of buying," says various consumer experts. You need not get very much surprised because supermarkets are the ones who encourage you. From the point of your entrance to the place where you exit, every aspect of the store's layout is designed to stimulate shopping interests.
When you enter a supermarket, you will find mostly fresh items near the entrance such as flowers, vegetables, milk, and their products. These are placed there because when you walk in and find something that smells great, and simultaneously builds the notion of 'fresh' that attracts us. Then we can find bakery products and grab-to-go items such as snacks, bottled water. These items get your salivary glands going and start feeling hungry and intended to buy more food items.
In the middle of the store, you will find general merchandise, cooking ingredients, and canned goods. All these items are necessary and more popular and they are placed in a way to bring the customers deeper inside the store. During this, they are exposed to non-essential items along the way to the middle of the store. And items like eggs, meat, etc, are placed at the farthest reaches of the store to force customers to impulsively buy other things in their way. And items like candy, magazines, perfumes, etc, are kept near to the billing counters to turn your billing time into some purchasing time.
Stores not only manipulate us in terms of section division, but we are again tricked in terms of the way items are placed on the shelves. They will put the popular brands and items on the lowest shelves. Items that attract small children are placed in a manner such that they are always in the reach of them. And in the last, unpopular brands and items are kept on the topmost shelves to catch your eyes unnecessarily.
So, next time whenever you visit the supermarket, always remember what is necessary. You can always prefer to make a list of your requirements. Always remember that "Market is there to fulfill your needs, not you are there to fulfill market's need."
