Myanmar: Democratic pillars fall apart

This is not the first time when democracy had been murdered in Myanmar. So, it is unlikely to say that Myanmar is an example of Democracy. They gained their independence from the British Empire in 1948 and became a democratic nation. But it never lasted long in their history as, after 10 years in 1958, they were under military control for the first time. It lasted for nearly more than 50 years. Finally, the military dictatorship was officially dissolved in 2011, followed by a general election in 2010. Aung San Suu Kyi emerged as the leader of democratic Myanmar.

But again 2021 was the year to be specially mentioned in the history of Myanmar. On February 1, 2021, the Myanmar military arrested the civilian leaders of the national and state governments and announced a one-year "state of emergency." The military arrested leader Aung San Suu Kyi, President Win Myint, and several dozen other senior officials in early morning raids in the capital, Naypyidaw. The officials were in the capital for the lower house of Parliament to summon after the November  2020 national elections, which NLD (National League of Democracy) won by a large margin. The military also detained NLD officials and civil society activists in other parts of Myanmar, and cut telecommunications and the internet.

The military has alleged without evidence about voter irregularities during the November general elections. They also claimed that the UEC (Union Election Commission) failed in addressing the concerns of opposition political parties, and the military. UEC also failed to perform its duties to conduct a free, fair, and transparent election.

Earlier, the military refused to seize control of the government. But on February 1, the military invoked an article of the military-drafted 2008 constitution that allows it to declare a state of emergency and take control of all three branches of government. Myint Swe, the vice-president, signed the authorization for the declaration acting as president. The military also announced that the general election will be held after one year.

How should be democracy defined here? Could any International power can intervene in their internal matter and save the democracy and its followers? Activists like Greta Thunberg or popstar singer Rihanna, who questioned Indian democracy over freedom of speech and protest. They are out of words about this violation, neither they seem to be interested in that.

It should be within the power that constitutional rights can be violated if it matters to protect national democracy. You cannot completely rule out the military pointing it as a violation of democracy, because there were faults seen in the election. Again military should have forced for re-election and continued democracy. It would have been a definitely better option than the one they have opted to declare a one-year "state of emergency."
